PEZZANO SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS ANNOUNCED

(Grapevine, TX) July 10, 2011 – The Chuck Pezzano Shcolarship Winners were announced at the Bowling Writers Association of America (BWAA) Annual Meeting & Convention at Bowl Expo on June 28, 2011 in Grapevine, Texas.  BWAA President, Jackie Wyckoff, notified all winners prior to the announcement.
The award is named in honor of BWAA, United States Bowling Congress and Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Fame journalist Chuck Pezzano of Clifton, NJ.  It is in his name the BWAA has dedicated itself to creating a new generation of bowling journalists, photographers, artists and promoters by offering students who meet specified criteria the opportunity for growth and recognition in the sport of bowling.  In addition to their financial awards, the winners receive a one-year membership in the BWAA.

 

The 2011 Pezzano Scholarship Winners are:

Matthew (Matt) Perry – Shelton, CT  - 1st Place - $1500

This bright young man attends Woodhouse Academy in Milford, CT and is a top junior bowler in New England.  Matt proved himself not only to be an excellent writer but also a great promoter of the sport.  He is President/Founder of the Family Night Bowling Organization, which promotes scholarship-bowling opportunities for junior bowlers in the area.  In three years, he has awarded more than $30,000 to over 200 local bowlers.

Kenny Martin – Pacifica, CA  - 2nd Place - $1000

A student at San Jose State University with an expected graduation date of 2012, Kenny’s entry essay, “Chasing 300,” provided the reader a better understanding about the challenges involved in one becoming their absolute best.  A teacher of his once commented, “as sports editor of the school newspaper, he was an invaluable asset because of his ability to brainstorm ideas, think critically and write well.”  Additionally, Kenny is currently bowling for San Jose State’s bowling team.

Phillip (Phil) Brylow – Waukesha, WI - 3rd place - $500

With the help of family and the bowling community, Phil produced the TV show “Spring Youth Challenge,” which aired on Time Warner Sports in July of 2007.  Since then, over 100 hours of bowling programming have aired on Time Warner Sports 32, creating local stars from the ranks of the area’s youth bowlers.

Send your application today for the 2012 BWAA Chuck Pezzano Scholarship

Applications are being accepted for the Bowling Writers’ Association of America’s Chuck Pezzano Scholarships awarded annually to worthy students who are high school seniors, vocational school seniors or current college students who are not over the age of 25 during the year in which the award is presented.

The award is named in honor of BWAA, United States Bowling Congress and Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Fame journalist Chuck Pezzano of Clifton, N.J.

To be eligible, applicants must meet the following requirements:

·         Involvement in the field of communications (to mean all who communicate with words and images). For example; writers, journalists, television, radio or web broadcasters, public relations or publicity directors, graphic artists, copy writers, as well as photo journalists, illustrators and cartoonists.

·         Maintain a minimum 2.5/4.0 GPA or equivalent

  • Participate in the sport of bowling, although bowling skills are NOT a requisite
  • May not have exceeded their 25th birthday during the calendar year of the award
  • Include at least one reference letter
  • Write a short, titled essay not to exceed 500 words
  • Include a copy of their school transcripts with the application

Please do not include stories, articles or press clippings that may have been written about you. 

Up to three (3) scholarships per year may be awarded based on the applicant’s credentials. Any or all of the funds may or may not be distributed at the discretion of the committee. Individual awards may not exceed $1,500 per year and yearly combined scholarships may not exceed $3,000 per year. If there are any ties, money will be split. Winners will also receive a one-year paid membership in BWAA.

To apply, log on to the BWAA web site at BowlingWriters.com, click on Scholarships and download the application. Complete the form and return it, including supporting documents, postmarked no later than May 15th, 2012.

Winners will be announced at the BWAA Annual Meeting & Convention at Bowl Expo scheduled in June in Reno, NV.  Winners will be notified by the BWAA President.
